Edible Estates Signage & Illustration

Outdoor signage for living exhibit for the Edible Estates project by Fritz Haeg, author of the infamous Edible Estates: Attack On The Front Lawn. It was absolutely a blast to work directly with Fritz on the simple, yet effective direction.

This triangle garden was in front of a busy community center with active positive environments for children, so it was essential that the signage be simple, direct and lead the viewer to the information. Therefore, each species of plant is an actual silhouetted illustration of the real plants.

Ultimately the goal was successful: to showcase and inform the real natural history of the island of Manhattan. To learn more about each story behind the species grown in the garden visit: EDIBLE ESTATES garden #8.

Photography used for the illustrated silhouettes utilizing patience, time and highly detailed mapping.

Initial layout, measuring and structuring details of where
the white-washed wood vinyl signage would be placed.
This was without a doubt, the most difficult part of the process, but the most rewarding. It is nice to step out
of the digital artboard and into the real world using a pencil and a yardstick.

Note: Check out the interactive Google map
of what Manhattan used to be: http://welikia.org/explore/mannahatta-map/.

This is worth checking out, proving authenticity to the facts, Fritz worked with Eric Sanderson, author of Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City. Sanderson's work helped pinpoint amazing details
to the project such as a stream that used to run through that exact location.
